Advice: Don’t delete anything. Keep it. It’s a memory as well as something you can look back on to see how far you’ve progressed.
MIC CHECK. MIC CHECK. MyrVox here. Welcome to Day 2. The Infodump Day.
Realization #1: Equip yourself before an adventure.
Even a rookie in games has rookie equipment in the beginning. And further in the adventure, you level up along with your equipment.
Currently, I’m still a rookie with beginner equipment. Specifically, I have my phone, earphones and a handheld microphone to accompany me in my journey as a VA.
In the first half of the day I was able to learn about making my own home studio, a little bit of sound editing in audacity and adobe audition and learning about my niche. It was a lot to take in honestly but it was very helpful. For now I still can’t afford a home studio but I sure am looking forward to when I finally can.
Realization #2: My niche, my zone.
Dubbing. Audiobooks. Commercials. And a lot more.
There is so many things we can do with our voice and I learned from the first half of Day 2 with Sir Joshua that its important to see where are voices are better suited for. Master one and proceed to another. Build up your experience as a voice artist and grow your niche along the way.
In identifying my niche, I have to ask myself what skills do I have? What is the quality of my voice? What is unique to me? What type of project do I want and I’ve done?
Skills - I’m great at putting emotions in my voice. I’m still studying on how to do voice impressions but so far, my previous experience with voice lessons, acting and characterization are what I’m using for the majority of my voice acting.
Quality of my voice - I’ve been told I have a soothing voice. A nice voice to listen to and I’ve also surprised people with it. In their terms, give them goosebumps.
Type of Project - So far, I’ve done a bit of commercial for my Marketing assignments as a student, a bit of broadcasting but I’ve heard feedback that my tone is more for English broadcasting, and a bit of voice acting in Tiktok with Japanese scripts and anime lines. Aside from that, the type of project I desire would be voice dubbing and audiobooks which I still need to improve on.
I have a vague idea of my niche so I’ll continue working around that and give myself a clearer vision on what road I should take as a voice artist.
Realization #3: The journey ahead is not a smooth road.
Listening to Direk Reymar’s experiences from the start to the present, it was exciting and pretty fun. I was entertained all throughout listening to him. But aside from that, I also learned a lot.
Not everything will go your way. There will be criticism and rejection and rarely you will come upon opportunities to shine. Don’t hesitate. Take them on. Be open-minded. Accept criticism and grow from it.
Always look back from where you started to see how far you’ve progressed and what you still need to improve on.
It was a pretty enlightening talk and I was grateful to know and see how it is like behind the scenes or in the studio.
Having heard about the opportunity for us in Batch 14 to visit and also be allowed to audition in the studio made me excited and look forward to it. I will make sure to visit if the opportunity to go to Manila is presented to me.
This is pretty much everything for me for Day 2.
Looking forward to the future - MyrVox.
